Silicone, whilst a very durable product, can wear away and allow water to get in over extended periods. Whilst replacing caulking is one way to stop water getting in, it does not mean it will stop all water from getting in. You need to ensure you have proper waterproofing membranes and installation in place, caulking is a small step in a large process of having an area waterproofed correctly.
When assessing remedial caulking works, the first step we undertake it to assess the condition of the existing caulking. This involves inspecting the joints, cracks, and gaps to determine the extent of the damage and the underlying causes. Common issues that may require remedial caulking include cracking, crumbling, shrinkage, or detachment of the existing caulk, or build up of mould or grime over time that discolours and stains the caulking.
From here we prepare the area that need to be cut out and re caulked. This typically involves cleaning the joints and removing any debris, dirt, or old caulking that may interfere with adhesion with hand and power tools. Depending on the severity of the damage, it may also be necessary to repair or reinforce the underlying substrate to ensure a stable base for the new caulking, which is required by a 3rd party.
